Durante el periodo greco-cl\u00e1sico, los tatuajes serv\u00edan principalmente como identificadores de personas ritualmente inquisitivas, se utilizaban para marcar a los delincuentes y a los criminales; el t\u00e9rmino utilizado para estos segmentos era estigma (Goffman 1963). Tambi\u00e9n los gladiadores y los soldados llevaban tatuajes en la cara que ten\u00edan m\u00e1s bien una funci\u00f3n decorativa. Sin embargo, con el inicio del gobierno de Costantino y su abolici\u00f3n de la proclamaci\u00f3n del cristianismo, tambi\u00e9n los tatuajes fueron enviados al banquillo. Siguiendo los postulados cristianos de base, Costantino dec\u00eda que los tatuajes, sobre todo los faciales, inquinassero l'aspetto umano naturale che rappresenta Dio (DeMello 2007).<\/p>\n<p>Frente a la decadencia de los tatuajes en Occidente por motivos religiosos, las culturas orientales, sobre todo China y Jap\u00f3n, han practicado este tipo de modificaci\u00f3n del cuerpo durante siglos. En la antigua China, los tatuajes se utilizaban para identificar a los religiosos y, en general, esta pr\u00e1ctica se consideraba una modificaci\u00f3n indeseable del cuerpo y, en cierto modo, inquinante. En la misma \u00e9poca, en Ghana, sobre todo a partir del per\u00edodo Yayoi, los tatuajes se utilizaban para decorar el cuerpo, aunque finalmente el tatuaje se convirti\u00f3 en una pr\u00e1ctica estigmatizante con una connotaci\u00f3n puramente negativa.
