Nacido en 1911, Norman Collins empez\u00f3 a tatuar siendo adolescente y, como todos los dem\u00e1s artistas de la \u00e9poca, utilizaba el m\u00e9todo handpoke.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, con la difusi\u00f3n de <a href=\"https:\/\/rightstuff.eu\/product-category\/tattoo-machines\/\">m\u00e1quinas de tatuar<\/a> que se vend\u00edan y anunciaban a trav\u00e9s de todos los peri\u00f3dicos importantes, s\u00f3lo unos pocos artistas siguieron utilizando el estilo handpoke, siguiendo las tendencias. Lo mismo hizo Collins, que a finales de los a\u00f1os 20 obtuvo conocimientos pr\u00e1cticos sobre el uso de m\u00e1quinas de tatuar de un artista de Chicago, Tatt Thomas, ya famoso en EEUU. Ya en los a\u00f1os 30, Sailor Jerry abri\u00f3 su primer estudio de tatuajes en Hawai.<\/p>\n<p>Durante la II Guerra Mundial Collins sirvi\u00f3 como marine y adem\u00e1s de tatuar en distintos puertos del Lejano Oriente tambi\u00e9n empez\u00f3 a desarrollar su inter\u00e9s por los tatuajes orientales. En los a\u00f1os siguientes persigui\u00f3 el objetivo de desarrollar el tatuaje como forma de arte independiente, centr\u00e1ndose en el valor creativo de los dise\u00f1os; parte de esta persecuci\u00f3n consisti\u00f3 en criticar duramente a los tatuadores estadounidenses contempor\u00e1neos, a quienes Collins consideraba faltos de talento y que copiaban obras de otros.<\/p>\n<p>Por otra parte, Sailor Jerry empez\u00f3 a dar forma a la comunidad del tatuaje estableciendo correspondencia con algunos artistas del tatuaje para intercambiar experiencias e ideas y que sintieron simpat\u00eda por su objetivo de establecer el tatuaje como una forma de arte.<\/p>\n<p>En 1960 Collins abri\u00f3 su \u00faltimo sal\u00f3n de tatuajes en Honolulu, sus obras realizadas all\u00ed se convirtieron en las piezas de arte del tatuaje m\u00e1s famosas de la \u00e9poca. Siguiendo su inter\u00e9s por la tradici\u00f3n oriental del tatuaje, inici\u00f3 relaciones comerciales con importantes artistas japoneses y de Honk Cong, intercambiando m\u00e1quinas americanas y <a href=\"https:\/\/rightstuff.eu\/product-tag\/tattoo-supplies\/\">equipo<\/a> por los conocimientos orientales en los aspectos del uso del color y el sombreado.<\/p>\n<p>Al mismo tiempo, seg\u00fan algunas fuentes, Sailor Jerry segu\u00eda teniendo sentimientos patri\u00f3ticos y, mediante estrechas relaciones con tatuadores japoneses y aprendiendo su t\u00e9cnica, intentaba \"ganarles en su propio juego\", ya que el propio Collins no pod\u00eda perdonar el bombardeo japon\u00e9s de Pearl Harbor (DeMello 2007). A pesar de estos rumores, lo cierto es que Sailor Jerry contribuy\u00f3 al desarrollo de lo que posteriormente se denominar\u00e1 estilo americano o oldschool, que en realidad elabor\u00f3 tomando prestada la est\u00e9tica del tatuaje japon\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>El uso del fondo como parte unificada del tatuaje lleg\u00f3 a ser tan innovador en Am\u00e9rica que el n\u00famero de seguidores que bajaron los brazos ante la influencia oriental fue bastante modesto, sin embargo aquellos individuos que siguieron a Collins llegaron a ser muy influyentes en el mundo del tatuaje.
